London Stock Exchange LSE
Short history
Founded in 1801, it is one of the largest stock exchanges in the world, with many overseas listings as well as British companies. For many decades, the Exchange provided a trading floor where members ofthe Exchange could buy and sell shares.
In 1995 LSE launched AIM - the international market for growing companies. In 2000 LSE transferred its role as UK Listing Authoritywith HM Treasury to the Financial Services Authority (FSA). Shareholders vote to become a public limited company: London Stock Exchange plc.
In 2007 The London Stock Exchange merged with Borsa Italiana, creating London Stock Exchange Group.

FTSE All-Share Index - capitalisationweighted index, comprising around 800 of more than 2,000 companies traded on the London Stock Exchange.
